Biography of Woodrow Wilson (28th President of US)

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia, on December 28, 1856 and died in Washington, DC on February 3, 1924, at the age of 67.

Woodrow Wilson is the 28th President of the United States (served in 1913 - 1921). He is a follower of the Presbyterian, which is recorded in history and politicians who are quite religious.

As a Democrat reform figure, he was elected as the 34th New Jersey Governor (in 1910) and elected President in 1912. Wilson himself came from the Democratic Party.

During his tenure as President, he was accompanied by Vice President Thomas R. Marshall. During his tenure, many important events occurred, such as:
  • The end of World War I
  • The establishment of the League of Nations (the pioneer of the establishment of the United Nations)
  • Independence for many countries in Europe
  • The emergence of US hegemony as a superpower

However, at that time, the United States did not want to interfere in the current affairs of the world. Wilson won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 thanks to his successful co-founding League of Nations.

Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856. After graduating from Higher Education, he studied law and subsequently obtained his doctorate in theology and history.

For approximately 15 years, from 1885 to 1910, Wilson taught at several universities, including Princeton University, where he served as President for 8 years.

Meanwhile, in 1910, he was elected governor of New Jersey and in 1912, he became a candidate for President of the Democratic Party.

Wilson proposed a program called Barn Freedom, which emphasized individualism, equality of opportunity for all, small and state rights.

Presidency

Woodrow Wilson became President for two terms, from 1913 to 1921. During his first term, he cleverly established several important constitutions through the Congress which has been held, such as:
  1. Laws associated with federal income taxes are storied
  2. Anti-monopoly law
  3. Constitution of prohibition to employ children (still under age)

President Wilson has a high desire to maintain good relations and peaceful relations with other countries without resorting to violence or threats. During World War I, in 1914, he always tried to make the United States has a neutral attitude.

However, all that changed when Germany declared an infinite submarine war, in which four United States ships were drowned. Immediately, he asked Congress on April 2, 1917 to declare war with Germany.

President Woodrow Wilson immediately prepared the war, but, once the war was announced, he was also not afraid to arrange the armed forces and deploy the entire power of the United States.

While under his leadership, the life of the United States itself is organized as never before. With the massive efforts undertaken by the United States, it gradually changed the situation and was favorable for the Allies.

Right in January 1918, President Wilson spoke to Congress to explain the purpose of war committed by the United States, presented in the form of 14 famous chapters, which he proposed as one of the foundations for lasting peace.

The publication and dissemination of the proposed 14 chapters in German territory undermined the German spirit to win the war and the high determination by Wilson to not negotiate with anyone except with a democratic state, to accelerate the fall of the reign of the German Emperor.

The proposed 14 articles of President Woodrow Wilson contain 1 article to establish the United Nations General, which is able to guarantee political freedom and territorial integrity of all countries, both large and small countries.

This union is further known as the League of Nations, the organization that spearheaded the founding of the United Nations.

For all the efforts he has undertaken to create world peace, Woodrow Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919.

Died

The last moment of President Wilson became a sad moment. Wilson had a heart attack in 1919, in which he could no longer carry out the duties of government properly.

His efforts to bring the United States into the League of Nations also failed. Wilson quit his post in a very weak state and a spirit that has been destroyed.

Woodrow Wilson passed away on February 3, 1924.
