Meaning of Aerosol, Advantages and Disadvantages

Meaning of Aerosol, Advantages and Disadvantages - Aerosol is a term commonly used for the preparation of thin mist spray from systems that have high pressure.

It is often misunderstood in all types of pressure-containing preparations, some of which release foam or semi-solid fluid.

Meaning of Aerosol

Aerosol

Aerosols are technically more referring to solid particles present in the air (also called ash or particulate) or liquid droplets. In ordinary language, aerosols refer more to the aerosol spray tube or the contents of the tube.

The term aerosol derives from the fact that the "airborne" material in the air is a suspension (a mixture of solid, liquid or combined particles of both suspended in the liquid).

In order to distinguish the suspension from the actual solution, the term sol which initially evolved means to include thin or sub-microscopic particle dispersion in a liquid.

With the study of dispersion in the air, the term aerosol is growing and now capable of covering droplets of solid, solid particles to a combination of the two.

Advantages of Aerosol Use

Some features of pharmaceutical aerosols which are considered to be advantageous are more than other forms of dosage such as:
  1. Some medicines can be easily taken from their containers without any residue being polluted or exposed.
  2. Based on aerosol container, which is impermeable with air, the drug substance is protected from unwanted effects resulting from oxygen and humidity.
  3. Topical treatment can be given evenly, coat the skin without touching the treated area.
  4. Using a more precise formula and valve control, the physical shape and particle size of the emitted product can be adjusted, which may have contributed to the effectiveness of the drug, such as; Controlled fine mist of inhalation aerosol.
  5. Use or use of aerosols is a fairly clean process, requiring little wash by users or users.
  6. Easy to use and little contact with our hands.
  7. There is no danger of being contaminated because of its airtight containers.
  8. Irritation that can be caused by topical application can be reduced.
  9. The desired dosage can be arranged properly.
  10. An adjustable form of spray

Disadvantages of Aerosol Use

Disadvantages of aerosol dosage forms in the form of MDI (Metered Dose Inhalers), such as:
  1. MDIs that typically have dispersed drug ingredients and problems that will often arise, are related to physical stability
  2. Often the drug becomes less effective.
  3. Clinical efficacy usually depends on the patient's ability to use MDI properly and correctly.
