Biography of Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (The Inventor of X-Rays)

Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was born on March 27, 1845 and died on February 10, 1923, a physicist from Germany.

Conrad Rontgen became the first German physicist to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901, for his invention of the X-ray that marked the start of the age of modern physics and the revolution of diagnostic medicine.

Rontgen himself studied at ETH Zurich and later became professor of physics at the University of Strasbourg in 1876 to 1879, Giessen in 1879 to 1888, Wurzburg in 1888 to 1900 and Munich in 1900 to 1920.

The research has been done to work on elasticity, hair pipe motion against fluid, certain gas heat, heat conduction to the crystal, heat absorption by gas, and piezoelectricity.

In 1895 while experimenting with electric current flows and partially emptied glass tubes (cathode ray tubes), X-rays observed that adjacent platinum barium strips released light when the tube was in operation.

He formulated a theory if when the cathode ray (electrons) succeeded in penetrating the glass wall of the tube, then some unknown radiation was able to form across the room, penetrating in chemicals even capable of causing fluorescence.

Further observations also reveal that wood, paper to aluminum, among other materials, are transparent to this new form of radiation.

He is able to discover if it is capable of affecting the photographic plate and is not significantly capable of exhibiting several properties of light, be it reflection or refraction. In fact, he had thought though wrong if the light has no connection with light.

In view of the uncertain nature, he mentions the phenomenon of X radiation, though also known by the name of radiation Rontgen. He took the first X-ray photograph of the inner metal object and the bone of his wife's hand.
