Biography of Wernher von Braun (Space Engineer)

Wernher Magnus Maximilian, Freiherr von Braun, is a German-American rocket scientist, space engineer, space architect and one of the foremost figures in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany during World War II.

Wernher Magnus Maximilian was born on March 23, 1912 and died on June 16, 1977, at the age of 65 years.

He worked as a rocket designer between 1930 and 1970. Several people revealed that he was an important caliber rocket engineer in the 20th century.

After World War II, Werner and about 500 other rocket scientists surrendered to the United States, which went on through Operation Paperclip, and then flown to the United States.

In the United States, he worked for the US Army who then moved to NASA. Right in 1955, 10 years after being in the United States, von Braun was declared a citizen of the United States.

Wernher von braun is one of the developers and leaders of the V-2 rocket project, the first successful rocket in space, bombing several major cities, for example London. He also managed to develop Saturn V rockets, capable of bringing humans to go to the moon via the Apollo rides in 1969.

Wernher von Braun was born in Wyrzysk, Poland, on March 23, 1912. He was the second of three brothers.

His father, Magnus Freiherr von Braun, is a director general of a bank. His father was once a minister of food and agriculture. Meanwhile, his mother, Emmy von Quistorp, is a daughter of Prussian lawmakers.

Right in 1915, the family moved to Berlin and his father worked in the home department.

For his own school, von Braun attended the French high school in Berlin. When stepping on the age of 13 years, he was given a telescope by the mother. The gift given by her mother raised interest in astronomy.

Meanwhile, in 1925, von Braun went to school at the Ettersburg Castle boarding school near Weimar. However, it is quite apprehensive because of its not so good mathematical value and physical value.

Right in 1928, his parents moved von Braun to school at the Hermann-Lietz-Internat dormitory located on the island of Spiekeroog, Germany. Space travel has become one of the main attractions for von Braun and since then, he applied to study physics and mathematics, so his interest in the world of astronomy can be realized.

After school was completed, he went on to study at the Technological University of Berlin in 1930. In 1932, von Braun was awarded a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, where he continued to study physics at Friedrich-Wilhelms-University until graduating in 1934 with a degree Dr. Phil in physics. Not only that, von Braun also studied at ETH Zurich in 1931.

Nazi and V-2

In World War II, he managed to lead around 500 scientists and technicians to make missile rockets. The result is called the V-2 or Aggregat-4 (A4) rocket used by Nazi Germany in bombing several major cities in Europe, for example London, Antwerp and Liege.

Meanwhile, in London alone, it is estimated that the V-2 has killed more than 2500 people and more than 6500 people suffered severe injuries.

Toward the end of World War II, von Braun along with 500 German scientists handed over to the United States. By going through Operation Paperclip, all the experts along with the equipment were then transferred to the United States.
