Biography of Washington Irving (American Writer)

Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783 and died on November 28, 1859, a writer, author, biographer and historian originating from the United States in the 19th century.

He is known for his short stories titled "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle", both of which appear in his book at The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.

His works include the biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, as well as some Spanish historians in the 15th century who talked about figures such as Cristopher Colombus, Moor and Alhambra.

Irving himself also served as United States ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846.

He made his first debut in 1802 with a series of letters of observation to the Morning Chronicle, written with pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After he moved to England for family business in 1815, he managed to gain international fame when publishing The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, in 1819.

He also succeeded in publishing other works on a regular basis and even practically almost always succeed throughout his life and completed a biography of George Washington as much as 5 volumes 8 months before dying at the age of 76 years in Tarrytown, New York.

Irving along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first writers of the United States to be considered influential in Europe and Irving encouraged other American writers, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth, Longfellow and Edgar Allan Poe.

As the first international best-selling author of the United States, Irving claimed that by writing it became a legitimate profession and called for far more powerful legal assistance to protect American authors from a variety of copyright infringements.
